My first vehicle was my 1982 Chevrolet S-10 Sport, which I still own. My father ordered it new, and I was with him the Saturday morning in May we stopped by the dealer to pick it up. When I got my driver's license, Dad gave the truck to me. At the time, it had 92k miles of almost exclusive interstate driving (as he only really used the truck to drive to work), and was in excellent shape. It had a 2.8 liter V6 / 4 speed, which although not a powerhouse did give the truck reasonable speed, especially for a high-school student :)
My S-10 has been a member of the family for almost as long as I can remember. It got me through high school and college, drove me safely home when I was too tired to have any business on the road, safely navigated miles of icy roads I shouldn't have been on, and has never once complained. Even when it swallowed a head gasket in the spring of '99, it still was good enough to get me 90 miles from my townhouse to my parents' house so Dad and I could fix it. I've called it "faithful steed" more than once, and it has earned the name. Still, every time I get in it I am reminded that I have never owned or driven another vehicle that fits me better than my truck. I'm going to be doing a lot of work to it soon. It is starting to need some attention in paint, chassis, and interior. Some people ask me why I choose to spend money on my '82 model year truck; I'd try to explain it, but if they have to ask, they probably won't understand.
